When one or both people in a couple have ADHD it can have significant impact on the relationship. Many of these couples end up in couples therapy, but without a therapist who truly understands the interplay between the “typical dynamics” of couples and the impact of ADHD the treatment often fails. The purpose of this session is to discuss the various issues that present themselves in these couples and how to view what is going on through multiple lenses. I will also discuss some of the pitfalls for therapists in treating these couples and how to avoid them.

Sue Hallowell, LICSW is a social worker in private practice in Cambridge. In her private practice she works with individuals and couples with a wide range of issues as well as parents struggling with parenting their ADHD child. She is currently Clinical Director of The Hallowell Center in New York Center. For many years she was an adjunct faculty member at Simmons Graduate School of Social Work where she taught clinical assessment and diagnosis. She started her career at Massachusetts Mental Health Center where she worked in various capacities including Director of Inpatient Social Work.
